Sprint PCS in collaboration
with Lucent Technologies conducted the fastest data call ever in the US on April
5, 2001. At Sprint's test site in Kansas using a new technology developed by
the two industry leaders, a data call was performed transferring data at speeds
of 2.4 mbps! Sprint plans on making these 3G speeds available to the public
in stages of 144 kbps, 307 kbps, and 2.4 mbps by the end of 2003.

Software giant,
Oracle, is leading the Mobile Partner Initiative to develop a location based
services system. The initiative is a collaboration between Oracle and more than
20 companies in wireless research and development. Location based services allow
specialized content to be delivered to a mobile device based on physical geographical
location.
